The AI in Finance Awards are honours that reward exceptional ingenuity and commitment in the CFTE community. Following on from the AI in Finance course, we partnered again with Ngee Ann Polytechnic to devise an assignment that allows learners to use expertise from the course on developing business ideas promoting AI in Finance. These Awards deliver on the promise to make your AI idea a reality, connecting CFTE-associated experts with talents who may not otherwise have a voice.

Candidates and their proposals were assessed and placed into a shortlist of the 10 strongest papers – with Clarence Chan Wei Tak; Pouya Jamshidiat; and Matthew Jackson ultimately chosen as winners by the judging panel. Each winner demonstrated great business intuition and appreciation of Artificial Intelligence in their respective proposals.

Clarence Chan Wei Tak‘Preparing for Death – Optimizing Estate Planning’

For instance, winner Clarence Chan Wei Tak submitted a paper, “Preparing for Death – Optimizing Estate Planning”, which explores wealth management in estate planning.

A self-proclaimed ‘fan’ of Artificial Intelligence and its impact in finance, his interest in FinTech blossomed from readings on distributed ledger technology. Clarence joined MUFG Bank in 2016, and is currently Vice President of the Asian Investment Banking Division. He is spearheading their push to provide improved securitization solutions to corporate and financial institutions in East Asia.

His proposal has a predominant focus on disrupting the estate planning, an industry that has to this point seen limited disruption. Most private banks, some of whom provide comparable services, offer this service only to Ultra-High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWI) via their legacy planning teams. The intensive knowledge required (legislation, taxes, trusts, etc.) provide a reasonably high barrier of entry to future latecomers. Furthermore, the service is scalable to countries with strong legal frameworks and aging populations, particularly in Asia through: Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Clarence expands on the impact of his solution, by suggesting his idea will result in:

  • Fast-tracking processes – multi-year planning can be shortened into mere weeks.
  • Easy flagging – relevant regulations and tax issues would be flagged, although it would require clients to confirm with counsels and tax advisors to avoid disputes.
  • Allows future planning – clients can easily begin planning with the ‘end’ in mind, free of concerns of having concrete data as it can be constantly reviewed and changed.
  • Strong established markets – Countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have aging populations and strong legal frameworks. This solution can easily slot into those existing frameworks.

Currently, detailed estate planning is exclusive to the rich and privileged, with retail customers usually being offered unreasonable terms when sold their insurance policies. The intensive knowledge of global and local jurisdictions makes this scale of estate planning difficult.

Clarence clarifies the innovative methods of the AI in his proposed solution for estate planning, claiming it allows users to make their own choices in an aided manner. Moreover, users will be guided to provide information on assets and beneficiaries. The data gathered from users will be fed into a Decision Tree to generate a further decision strategy. Finally, a chatbot, using NLP, will be implemented in a later stage to generate sales leads and provide robust customer service.

Pouya Jamshidiat‘Smart Knowledge Assistant (SKA)’

Also a winner, Pouya Jamshidiat submitted a paper, ‘Smart Knowledge Assistant (SKA)’, which pairs smart machines with smart Customer Support Representatives to provide customers with a smart banking experience.

Born and raised in Iran, Pouya graduated in 2011 from Queen Mary University of London in Computer Science. He is now at Lloyds Banking Group, focusing on the largest ‘Digital Transformation in Banking’ sector in Europe, having previously worked as a Product Designer for Credit Management solutions at IBM.

His proposal is a tool powered by Artificial Intelligence technologies (cognitive, machine learning and RPA) used by customer support departments within financial institutions. The tool offers 3 main value propositions:

  • Coachingteaching CSRs (customer support representatives) on the job, both reactively and proactively, through performance patterns.
  • Knowledge Master integrated to sources of internal and external information, processing and constantly learning from usage.
  • Task Automationwill learn patterns of CSRs over time and suggest new efficient routines. It can eventually run on its own, only needing occasional supervision.

Pouya expands on the impact of his solution, by suggesting his idea will result in:

  • Impact on Training – 60% improvement in workforce planning as CSRs are upskilled, and reduced costs due to 50% reduction in classroom training.
  • Impact on Information and Insight – 40% reduction in Average Handling Time, and reduction in cognitive load for CSRs.
  • Task Automation – 30% increase in CSR capacity and increase in accuracy, consistency and efficiency of all processes.

The proposal aims for the customer experience to be personalised, as banks gain more insight into their customers as their profiles are continuously enriched.

He explains the innovative methods of SKA by claiming the key AI components include:

  • Speech-to-text – Understanding conversation between the calling customer and CSR, to analyse and generate insight for future conversation.
  • Sentiment Analysis – Understanding customer and CSR moods which can be fitted into a machine learning algorithm to build profiles for each.
  • Intelligent Search – A combination of advanced search methods and cognitive algorithms to find the right content from all integrated systems.

Pouya’s AI solution aims to massively change the way customer queries are dealt with. It also brings gamification to customer support and encourages CSRs to always improve, removing the current hierarchical model.

Matthew Jackson – ‘A simple AI solutions toolkit for common issues in NGO/Charity banking sector’

Winner Matthew Jackson submitted a paper, ‘A simple AI solutions toolkit for common issues in NGO/Charity banking sector’, focusing on an AI solution that reduces the regulatory reporting overhead of charities and those in the NGO banking sector.

Matthew has lived throughout Asia and Europe, working in senior roles in sales, marketing and product management. He has been a regional lead for ASEAN at Integrated Research (IR) for payments and compliance, and a business manager for a software start-up in Singapore.

His proposal challenges the legislation around risk and reporting that impact the not-for-profit sector’s ability to primarily focus on raising money. It tackles the common theme facing these organisations: the common reporting standard (CRS) around anti-money-laundering guidance from OECB.

Explaining the potential impact of the AI solution, he explains that many charities have limited IT resources and are particularly vulnerable to being victimized by cyber-attacks. Reducing the regulatory reporting overhead for those in the not-for-profit sectors has the double impact of allowing them more time for fundraising without the impending risk of accounts being closed.

Matthew delves into the innovation of his AI solution, claiming that while it would be a relatively simple implementation of standard RPA (Robotic Process Automation) – the challenge is making the technology, that these solutions lie in, available securely to third parties via cloud or VPN services. Providing this service model of existing technologies is unique; the data gathering would be centered around current legislation and leverage knowledge of anomaly detection that already exists within banks.  

His AI solution would ultimately increase assurance to donors that charities are compliant with legislation, increase job satisfaction among workers as they spend more field time fundraising, and lessen the risk of charities being held associated with financial crimes within their accounts.

Clarence Chan Wei Tak‘Preparing for Death – Optimizing Estate Planning’

For instance, winner Clarence Chan Wei Tak submitted a paper, “Preparing for Death – Optimizing Estate Planning”, which explores wealth management in estate planning.

A self-proclaimed ‘fan’ of Artificial Intelligence and its impact in finance, his interest in FinTech blossomed from readings on distributed ledger technology. Clarence joined MUFG Bank in 2016, and is currently Vice President of the Asian Investment Banking Division. He is spearheading their push to provide improved securitization solutions to corporate and financial institutions in East Asia.

His proposal has a predominant focus on disrupting the estate planning, an industry that has to this point seen limited disruption. Most private banks, some of whom provide comparable services, offer this service only to Ultra-High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWI) via their legacy planning teams. The intensive knowledge required (legislation, taxes, trusts, etc.) provide a reasonably high barrier of entry to future latecomers. Furthermore, the service is scalable to countries with strong legal frameworks and aging populations, particularly in Asia through: Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Clarence expands on the impact of his solution, by suggesting his idea will result in:

  • Fast-tracking processes – multi-year planning can be shortened into mere weeks.
  • Easy flagging – relevant regulations and tax issues would be flagged, although it would require clients to confirm with counsels and tax advisors to avoid disputes.
  • Allows future planning – clients can easily begin planning with the ‘end’ in mind, free of concerns of having concrete data as it can be constantly reviewed and changed.
  • Strong established markets – Countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have aging populations and strong legal frameworks. This solution can easily slot into those existing frameworks.

Currently, detailed estate planning is exclusive to the rich and privileged, with retail customers usually being offered unreasonable terms when sold their insurance policies. The intensive knowledge of global and local jurisdictions makes this scale of estate planning difficult.

Clarence clarifies the innovative methods of the AI in his proposed solution for estate planning, claiming it allows users to make their own choices in an aided manner. Moreover, users will be guided to provide information on assets and beneficiaries. The data gathered from users will be fed into a Decision Tree to generate a further decision strategy. Finally, a chatbot, using NLP, will be implemented in a later stage to generate sales leads and provide robust customer service.

Pouya Jamshidiat‘Smart Knowledge Assistant (SKA)’

Also a winner, Pouya Jamshidiat submitted a paper, ‘Smart Knowledge Assistant (SKA)’, which pairs smart machines with smart Customer Support Representatives to provide customers with a smart banking experience.

Born and raised in Iran, Pouya graduated in 2011 from Queen Mary University of London in Computer Science. He is now at Lloyds Banking Group, focusing on the largest ‘Digital Transformation in Banking’ sector in Europe, having previously worked as a Product Designer for Credit Management solutions at IBM.

His proposal is a tool powered by Artificial Intelligence technologies (cognitive, machine learning and RPA) used by customer support departments within financial institutions. The tool offers 3 main value propositions:

  • Coachingteaching CSRs (customer support representatives) on the job, both reactively and proactively, through performance patterns.
  • Knowledge Master integrated to sources of internal and external information, processing and constantly learning from usage.
  • Task Automationwill learn patterns of CSRs over time and suggest new efficient routines. It can eventually run on its own, only needing occasional supervision.

Pouya expands on the impact of his solution, by suggesting his idea will result in:

  • Impact on Training – 60% improvement in workforce planning as CSRs are upskilled, and reduced costs due to 50% reduction in classroom training.
  • Impact on Information and Insight – 40% reduction in Average Handling Time, and reduction in cognitive load for CSRs.
  • Task Automation – 30% increase in CSR capacity and increase in accuracy, consistency and efficiency of all processes.

The proposal aims for the customer experience to be personalised, as banks gain more insight into their customers as their profiles are continuously enriched.

He explains the innovative methods of SKA by claiming the key AI components include:

  • Speech-to-text – Understanding conversation between the calling customer and CSR, to analyse and generate insight for future conversation.
  • Sentiment Analysis – Understanding customer and CSR moods which can be fitted into a machine learning algorithm to build profiles for each.
  • Intelligent Search – A combination of advanced search methods and cognitive algorithms to find the right content from all integrated systems.

Pouya’s AI solution aims to massively change the way customer queries are dealt with. It also brings gamification to customer support and encourages CSRs to always improve, removing the current hierarchical model.

Matthew Jackson – ‘A simple AI solutions toolkit for common issues in NGO/Charity banking sector’

Winner Matthew Jackson submitted a paper, ‘A simple AI solutions toolkit for common issues in NGO/Charity banking sector’, focusing on an AI solution that reduces the regulatory reporting overhead of charities and those in the NGO banking sector.

Matthew has lived throughout Asia and Europe, working in senior roles in sales, marketing and product management. He has been a regional lead for ASEAN at Integrated Research (IR) for payments and compliance, and a business manager for a software start-up in Singapore.

His proposal challenges the legislation around risk and reporting that impact the not-for-profit sector’s ability to primarily focus on raising money. It tackles the common theme facing these organisations: the common reporting standard (CRS) around anti-money-laundering guidance from OECB.

Explaining the potential impact of the AI solution, he explains that many charities have limited IT resources and are particularly vulnerable to being victimized by cyber-attacks. Reducing the regulatory reporting overhead for those in the not-for-profit sectors has the double impact of allowing them more time for fundraising without the impending risk of accounts being closed.

Matthew delves into the innovation of his AI solution, claiming that while it would be a relatively simple implementation of standard RPA (Robotic Process Automation) – the challenge is making the technology, that these solutions lie in, available securely to third parties via cloud or VPN services. Providing this service model of existing technologies is unique; the data gathering would be centered around current legislation and leverage knowledge of anomaly detection that already exists within banks.  

His AI solution would ultimately increase assurance to donors that charities are compliant with legislation, increase job satisfaction among workers as they spend more field time fundraising, and lessen the risk of charities being held associated with financial crimes within their accounts.
